Araucaria angustifolia

Also known as the Brazilian Pine, the Brazilian Monkey Puzzle tree, and the Candelabra Tree, the Paraná Pine is a beautiful conifer that is now critically endangered in the wild. Closely related to other Araucaria species like the Monkey Puzzle Tree of Chile and the Bunya Pine of Australia, the Paraná Pine is a living fossil that has somehow remained unchanged for millions of years in relative isolation.

Long lived to over 1,000 years of age, the Paraná Pine grows well in temperate and subtropical climates reaching over 100 feet in height with a trunk 2 to 3 feet in diameter. While somewhat slow growing, the Paraná Pine grows much more quickly than the Monkey Puzzle Tree, putting on at least 24 inches of growth per year and changes form over time: transitioning from sparse, symmetric branches as a juvenile, full branches when it first reaches reproductive maturity, and an umbrella canopy at full maturity.

Paraná Pine seeds are edible are a staple of indigenous diets in the southern Brazil. This species is dioecious, having both male and female plants that produce cones, although only the female cones produce edible nuts starting around 10 to 15 years of age. Our plants are seed grown and so may either be male or female.

Cold hardy to USDA zone 7b and above, or to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

For sale are 1 gallon potted plants.
