Australian Tree Fern

$30.00

Cyathea cooperi ‘Brentwood’

The Australian Tree Fern, sometimes known as the lacy tree fern or scaly tree fern, is a fast growing and rewarding evergreen fern native to the cool and humid forests of southeast Australia. Growing up to 40 feet tall, the Australian Tree Fern forms a trunk that can be up to a foot across and long, intricate fronds that can reach as much as fifteen feet in length in ideal conditions. The trunk and petioles of the fronds retain hair-like scales that give the Australian Tree Fern and soft and velvety appearance.

Our variety of Australian Tree Fern is the selection ‘Brentwood’, which is generally faster growing, has a stouter trunk and a fuller head of leaves than typical plants of this species. The scales on the trunk are noted as more copper colored.

Preferring cool and moist conditions, this fern is fairly cold tolerant and can handle cool winters. Winter protection can be fairly easy or these ferns fair well to life in a pot so long as they have good drainage, some shade, and plenty of watering.

Cold hardy to USDA zone 9a, or to approximately 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
