Desert Bird of Paradise

$6.00

Erythrostemon gilliesii syn. Caesalpinia gilliesii

Desert Bird of Paradise, also known as Hardy Bird of Paradise, is a deciduous shrub native to Argentina and Uruguay. It has become a popular ornamental plant for its lacey, pewter foliage and striking yellow and red flowers. Similar to the tropical birds of Oceania, Desert Bird of Paradise is dramatic, with long, scarlet stamens protruding from large, pastel yellow petals. While it also shares its common name with the South African Strelitzia, the plants are not related and quite different.

Growing between six and ten feet high, Desert Bird of Paradise has an open, airy form. They are drought tolerant once established and prefer full sun and good drainage. Desert Bird of Paradise will tolerate poor soils and is fast-growing and low maintenance. We recommend occasional pruning for a denser appearance.

Cold hardy to USDA zone 7b or to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

For sale are packets of 10 seeds
