Red Tiger Banana

from $25.00

Musa sikkimensis ‘Red Tiger’

‘Red Tiger’ is a selection of the Darjeeling Banana, Musa sikkimensis, that is notable for its red splotches on the tops of the leaves, somewhat like the stripes of a tiger. Native to the high elevations of Bhutan and India, this incredible banana species is one of the most cold-hardy varieties bananas in cultivation. Similar to the Japanese Fiber Banana, Musa basjoo, the roots of the Red Tiger Banana can survive freezing temperatures, tolerating down to at least 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

Fast growing, these plants can quickly reach 10 to 15 feet in height, sometimes in a single growing season. While these bananas do fruit, they are not a agriculturally cultivated variety and the fruit is full of seeds. A must have addition for the temperate garden going for that tropical look. Our plants are very quick growing and are ready to go in the ground.

Cold hardy to zone 8a, or to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
