Windmill Palm

from $4.00

Trachycarpus fortunei

The Windmill Palm, also commonly called the Chusan Palm, is an attractive and rustic palm tree native to China, India, and Japan. This species is widely considered to be one of the most cold hardy trunking palms in the world, happily growing as far north as British Columbia, Canada, with rumors of a few happy trees in Sitka, Alaska. Windmill Palms are quite easy to grow and are fairly quick to establish, ultimately growing up to 30 feet in height, 20 feet is more typical in the home garden.

Tolerating temperatures down to -5 degrees Fahrenheit, the Windmill Palm is a cornerstone plant for folks aiming to create that ‘tropical’ look in a cold-winter garden and has been very successful in the mid-Atlantic states. This palm’s fronds make elegant fan-shaped leaves which give it a lofty appearance and the trunk retains a fiber that gives the tree a wooly appearance. Our plants are starter-sized in large bands or 1 gallon pots, but should quickly pick up size with some warm weather.

Cold hardy to USDA zones 6b and above, or to -5 degrees Fahrenheit.
