Australian Mint Bush
Prostanthera ovalifolia
The Australian Mint Bush is a unique and fragrant evergreen plant hailing from Australia where it’s known as Native Mint. This highly ornamental plant is appreciated for its diminutive green foliage and its purple, orchid like flowers that loftily adorn the entire bush throughout the spring. As its name implies, the Australian Mint Bush has intensely aromatic foliage that smell something like a mixture of mint, oregano, and tea tree. The leaves are edible and have a history of both medicinal and culinary use.
Growing up to eight feet tall, five feet is more typical in the garden setting and the plant responds very well to pruning. Alpine Mint Bush serves as a great indicator plant for soil moisture levels, as it will gently weep when soil levels are dry.
Cold hardy to zone 8b or to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
