Bamboo Iris

$33.00

Iris wattii

One of two species known as Bamboo Iris, Iris wattii is closely related to Iris confusa but is a bigger plant with larger, ruffled flowers. This striking evergreen iris is native to the eastern Himalayan region, including parts of India, Myanmar, and China. Unlike most irises, Bamboo Iris develops reed-like stems as the foliage continues to grow upwards while shedding old leaves. This bamboo-like habit results in three foot tall plants with slender bare stems topped with a drooping fan of leaves atop. Bamboo Iris also has the curious habit of blooming on stalks, with sprays of frilly, pale lavender flowers held high above the foliage.

Bamboo Iris is probably the tallest iris species, reaching six feet high when in bloom in spring. Plants are clumping and will slowly spread to form a small colony. We recommend giving Bamboo Iris full or part shade, well-draining soil, and regular water. Protect from strong winds. If you live in a temperate climate, this is a wonderful choice for a tropical-style garden.

Cold hardy to USDA zone 8a or to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

For sale are 1 gallon potted plants
