$30.00

Yucca baccata

Banana Yucca, or Spanish Bayonet, is a hardy, evergreen succulent native to the deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Like other species of Yucca, it forms rosettes of pointed leaves and towers of creamy white, bell-shaped flowers. Unlike other Yucca, Banana Yucca has thick, fleshy leaves with curling fibers and plants produce a soft, edible fruit. These banana-shaped fruit give the plant its namesake and were traditionally eaten by indigenous peoples raw, baked, or roasted. The fruit have a flavor much like sweet potato, roasted pear, and banana.

Plants grow to three feet high and slowly spread through offsets over time. Banana Yucca is exceptionally drought tolerant and tolerates poor soils and extreme heat. We recommend planting in full sun with well-draining soil, but away from walkways as the tips of the leaves can be sharp.

Cold hardy to USDA zone 6a or to -20 degrees Fahrenheit

For sale are one gallon potted plants
