Black Goji Berry
Lycium ruthenicum
Black Goji Berry, also known as Black Wolfberry or Russian Box Thorn, is an edible nightshade species native to the semi-arid regions of Central Asia. A close relative to the common red Goji Berries, Lycium barbarum and Lycium chinense, Black Goji Berry fruit has been used for centuries throughout the Himalayas where it is valued for its high antioxidant content and purported health benefits. Traditionally brewed into a tea, the fruit can also be eaten fresh or incorporated into either sweet or savory dishes, where it adds a boost of color and flavor.
Plants are deciduous, woody perennials that typically grow three to six feet high and wide. They have a sprawling habit, with narrow gray-green leaves and small, tubular purple flowers and light thorns. Being native to harsh, dry climates, Black Goji Berry prefers full sun and good drainage in the garden. This species is resilient and adaptable, tolerating both high summer heat and frigid winter cold.
Cold hardy to USDA zones 5a and above, or to -20 degrees Fahrenheit.
