Blue Elderberry
Sambucus cerulea
Blue Elderberry is a deciduous shrub or small tree native to western North America, ranging from British Columbia down through California and into northern Mexico. Like other elderberry species, Blue Elderberry is renowned for its delicious fruit, which can be prepared in beverages, syrups, and jams. The attractive sprays of white flowers can also be used for teas and infusions. This fast-growing shrub is similar to the eastern Black Elderberry, but is notable for its powdery blue fruit and grey-green foliage.
Plants grow between ten and thirty feet tall and have a broad crown with arching branches. This graceful habit makes Blue Elderberry plants a wonderful backdrop in the garden for woodland style plantings. Plants are adaptable and thrive in full or part sun and are not particular to soil types. They are drought tolerant when established and respond well to pruning.
Cold hardy to USDA zone 5a or to -20 degrees Fahrenheit.
