Lemonwood
Pittosporum eugenioides
Endemic to New Zealand, Lemonwood is a unique small tree or large shrub that adds a little flair to the garden. Also known as Tarata, Lemonwood is a fast-growing, wind resistant, and drought tolerant plant ideal for privacy or screening . Attractive, shiny leaves have wavy, undulate edges and a bright green midrib which contrast with black branch stems. These plants offer an unfamiliar, exotic look that works well with both woodland and tropical style plantings. Plants typically reach twenty feet in height and half as wide but can eventually grow to upwards of thirty feet. While Lemonwood grows quickly with good sun exposure, we’ve found it to be surprisingly shade tolerant.
Lemonwood gains its common name from its lemon-scented foliage and sap, which have been used for generations by the Māori people of New Zealand in culinary preparations and as a perfume. The dried resin from the sap of the tree apparently made a great chewing gum. Today, Lemonwood is often enjoyed as an herbal tea, with a lemony green-tea flavor that’s soothing and refreshing.
Cold hardy to USDA Zone 8a or to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
