Bolivian Puya

from $3.00

Puya mirabilis

Bolivian Puya, as its common name suggests, is a bromeliad native to the high elevations of Bolivia as well western Argentina. In general species in the genus Puya can be quite spiny with hooked, serrated leaf edges that can make them unapproachable for the average gardener. We’re happy to say that this species is very easy to work around, with thin, grassy foliage, and gentle leaves that won’t catch you passing by. Bolivian Puya is also renowned for its precocity, with young plants often blooming at only a year in age.

Bolivian Puya is a terrestrial bromeliad, meaning that it prefers to be planted in soil and won’t be suitable for mounting like some other bromeliad varieties. That being said, this species is still very drought tolerant and low maintenance. Individual rosettes are monocarpic and once they bloom they’ll slowly senesce and replace themselves with a number of pups. This growth habit results in a clumping plant that can make a lovely border planting or an attractive feature in a rock garden.

Cold hardy to USDA Zone 8b or to 15 degrees Fahrenheit
