Brown Turkey Fig
Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey’
The Brown Turkey Fig is a vigorous and productive fig cultivar that is notable for reliably producing a heavy ‘breba’ crop in summer with high-quality, large figs. Brown Turkey is a desirable fig variety for cool summer climates where the main crop may not reliably ripen in Fall. Brown Turkey does not require pollination from a fig wasp and will produce sweet, seedless figs in more northernly latitudes than many varieties. Ripe fruit has a green-brown skin with amber flesh that is ideal for fresh eating, but also suitable prepared as dried figs and in jams and spreads. The fruit has a moderately closed eye, which means that fruit is unlikely to spoil while ripening on the tree.
This fig variety can reach twenty or more feet in height with age, but can easily pruned to manage size. Fig trees are very drought tolerant when established and prefer full sun, good drainage, and regular feeding with a balanced fertilizer. We find that Brown Turkey ripens a few weeks after Desert King.
Cold hardy to USDA zone 7b and above, or to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
For sale are live plants in 1 gallon pots.
