Changsha Mandarin is an ancient, cold-hardy citrus cultivar believed to have originated in China. This variety is unique in that it tolerates freezing temperatures well beyond what most Citrus can endure; surviving temperatures as low as ten degrees Fahrenheit. Changsha Mandarin survives and produces in regions too cold for most Citrus, including the Pacific Northwest where the fruit ripens in early winter. Like other mandarin varieties, Changsha has a thin peel. very little pith, sweet-tart orange flesh, and lots of juice.
Plants grow to six feet high and wide and have a rounded habit. Citrus prefer acidic, well-draining soil, good sun, and frequent feeding with a balanced fertilizer. If you’re concerned about winter cold-damage, consider planting your Changsha Mandarin in a western exposure where it won’t receive morning sun, or against a structure like a home or shed, or underneath a high, evergreen canopy. Citrus plants also make wonderful container plants.
Cold hardy to zone 8a or to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
This plant cannot be shipped to Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, or Texas.
