Cherry Prinsepia

Prinsepia sinensis

Prinsepia sinensis, commonly known as the Cherry Prinsepia, is a deciduous shrub native to China. The plant has a rich history, having been cultivated for centuries for its use in traditional Chinese medicine and for its edible fruit. Cherry Prinsepia is a hardy shrub that thrives in a variety of growing conditions. It prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil, but it can tolerate a range of soil types including sandy or clay soils. The plant is relatively drought-tolerant once established and can withstand cold temperatures, making it suitable for regions with harsh winters.

Cherry Prinsepia typically grows to a height of six to ten feet, forming a compact and rounded shape. It has slender branches with small thorns, and its leaves are lance-shaped and green, with a silvery underside. In the spring, the shrub produces clusters of small, fragrant yellow flowers that give way to small orange or red edible fruits in the late summer or early fall. The fruit has a tart flavor and is often used to make jams, jellies, and sauces.

Cold hardy to USDA zone 4a or to -30 degrees Fahrenheit.
