Chilean Heather

Fabiana imbricata

Chilean Heather, known as pichi or palo piche in its native range, is an evergreen shrub native to the arid and mountainous regions of Chile and Argentina. While it looks a lot like a heather, from the family Ericaceae, Chilean Heather belongs to the Solanaceae and is more closely related to petunia. Plants have dense, scaley foliage much like heath but have stems with an upwards pointing habit. In early summer plants are smothered in a profusion of small, pale violet, tubular flowers that are quite showy.

Chilean Heather prefers full sun and well-draining soil. This hardy shrub is well-suited for rock gardens and Mediterranean landscapes, being drought tolerant and low-maintenance. Plants grow to around five feet high and wide and are long-lived.

Cold hardy to USDA zone 7b or to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
