Corynabutilon vitifolium
The Chilean Tree Mallow is a large, evergreen flowering shrub endemic to central Chile. A close relative of the Flowering Maples (and more distantly of Hibiscus), this species is grown as a garden ornamental for its large, showy, lavender flowers. Plants bloom in late spring in profusion, with cup-shaped, outward facing blossoms that seem to glow in the twilight of sunset. When not in bloom, Chilean Tree Mallow has handsome, grape-leaf-like foliage with a characteristic grey color and soft, velvety texture.
Chilean Tree Mallow is fast-growing, quickly reaching twelve feet high in just a couple of years. Plants have an upright and open habit and should be sheltered from harsh winds. Unlike the Flowering Maples, once established this species is very drought tolerant. We recommend full or part sun and a well draining position.
Cold hardy to USDA Zone 8a or to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
