Chinese Hollygrape

$30.00

Mahonia lomariifolia x japonica

We’re excited to offer an unusual relative to the Oregon Grapes, the Chinese Hollygrape. This uncommon plant is most often known simply as Mahonia x media and there are a few selected cultivars available in the nursery trade. Our plants are seedlings from the selection ‘Marvel’. Chinese Hollygrape is a hybrid between two species of Mahonia native to China and Taiwan which combines the large, architectural qualities of Mahonia lomariifolia with the cold hardiness and adaptability of Mahonia japonica.

Chinese Hollygrape is an impressive large shrub that truly looks like something out of the Jurassic period. Long, pinnate leaves of tough, leathery leaflets radiate from stems with furrowed bark. In late winter large, upright spikes of bright yellow flowers are some of the first of the season. In summer, strings of bright blue berries are a hit with the birds. Plants prefer shade and are drought tolerant when established. Chinese Hollygrape will slowly grow to reach 10-12 feet high and 6-8 feet wide.

Cold hardy to USDA Zone 7b or to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
