Quercus suber

The Cork Oak is an incredible evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean Basin that provides the common cork material we’re all familiar with. From wine bottle stoppers to flooring and thumbtack boards to the cores of cricket balls, cork is a valuable, natural material used throughout the world that comes from the bark of the Cork Oak tree. Commercial plantings of Cork Oak are common in Portugal where the bark is traditionally harvested from the trees on roughly nine year cycles.

Cork Oak trees grow to between thirty and forty five feet high and are moderately long-lived trees. Trees are evergreen, drought tolerant, wind-resistant, and surprisingly shade tolerant. Cork Oak trees have dense foliage that provides good habitat for birds and its acorns are a great food source for wildlife.

Cold hardy to USDA Zone 7b or to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
