Berberis darwinii

Darwin’s Barberry is an evergreen shrub native to the temperate forests of southern Chile and Argentina. Like many other Berberis species, Darwin’s Barberry has edible fruit and a long history of use by Indigenous peoples of its native range. These dark blue, tart berries are similar to those of the related oregon grape (Mahonia sp.) are still used regionally today in jams, jellies, and beverages.

This dense shrub typically grows between six and eight feet tall and wide and is an excellent choice for a hedge. In early spring Darwin’s Barberry is laden with showy, mustard colored flowers, which contrast again the plants dark green, boxy foliage. Plants are adaptable, but prefer full or part sun and well-draining soils. Darwin’s Barberry is drought tolerant once established.

Cold hardy to USDA zone 7a or to 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
