Pomegranate
Punica granatum
The Pomegranate is a large deciduous shrub native to the Mediterranean. Middle East, and western Asia. It has been cultivated since ancient times for its edible fruit which is regarded for its juicy, ruby-red arils known for their sweet-tart flavor and satisfying crunch. Pomegranates are rich in antioxidants and nutrients and are wonderful eaten fresh, juiced, or prepared in syrups, wines, and desserts.
While Pomegranates thrive in hot, dry climates, there are varieties that also perform well in temperate regions. We carry several varieties, like ‘Salavatski’, that have been selected in western Russia for their early-bearing qualities, which makes them a great choice for cool-summer climates. Plants typically grow between six and fifteen feet high and have narrow, glossy leaves and showy red-orange flowers. Pomegranate plants are drought tolerant once established and prefer full or part sun and good drainage.
