Emu Apple, also known as muntries or native cranberry, is an evergreen, sprawling shrub native to southern Australia. As a so-called ‘bush tucker’ plant, Emu Apple is gaining some popularity in cultivation for its unique, edible fruit which are have a tart, spiced-apple flavor and are useful fresh or prepared. The fruit reach about half an inch in diameter and begin green in color before ripening to a bronze hue. While the fruit is small, they appear in abundance and have thin skin, imperceptible seeds, and a delightfully crisp texture.

Plants grow as a groundcover and have a dense habit with small, aromatic foliage and overlapping branches. Emu Apple grows to about one foot high and four feet wide and blooms in early summer with attractive clusters of fluffy white flowers. This species is adapted to dry coastal conditions and is drought tolerant when established. Emu Apple will tolerate full sun, but part sun will improve fruit production and quality.

Cold hardy to USDA zone 9a and above, or to 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
