Annona rugulosa

The Hardy Custard Apple is a wild relative of the cultivated Cherimoya and is native to high elevations in Southern Brazil and Argentina. Often found growing in forests of Paraná Pine, Araucaria angustifolia, Hardy Custard Apple is perhaps the most cold hardy species in the genus Annona. Naturally winter deciduous, plants can withstand moderate freezes and will make an outstanding exotic, edible addition to temperate gardens. While small, the fruit of the Hardy Custard Apple is high quality, with a rich, creamy texture and lightly-tart flavor.

Growing up to 20 feet high and 12 feet wide, the Hardy Custard Apple makes a very ornamental small tree in the garden, having broad, lanceolate leaves and a distinctive candelabra branching habit. Trees are deciduous in cold-winter climates but may remain evergreen in warmer climates. Plants are easy to care for and are can be quick growing if fertilized regularly. We do not yet now if plants are self-fertile.

Cold hardy to USDA Zone 8b and above, or to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
