Hollyleaf Redberry, also known as Hollyleaf Buckthorn, is an evergreen shrub native to the chaparral and canyons of western North America from Southern Oregon through northern Baja California and Arizona. As you might guess by the common name, Hollyleaf Redberry’s foliage superficially resembles the common Holly (Ilex species), to which it is not closely related. And just to dispel the mystery, yes this species also has red berries, which are quite attractive in early autumn. Otherwise, plants have a dense, rambling habit with intricately branching stems and finely serrated foliage.
Plants typically grow up to ten feet high and wide with time, but can easily be kept much smaller with pruning. In fact, being native to wildfire-prone regions, this plant curiously forms a lignotuber that allows it to regrow well from the ground. Hollyleaf Redberry is incredibly drought tolerant once established and makes a wonderful choice for poor soils or dry slopes. Full or part sun is best.
Cold hardy to USDA Zone 7a or to 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
