'Fukurin' Japanese Kadsura

$35.00

Kadsura japonica ‘Fukurin’

Japanese Kadsura is a hardy evergreen vine with a long history of cultivation in its native Japan. Like other vines in the Schisandraceae, Japanese Kadsura produces bright red clusters of edible fruit, which are similar to the Chinese Magnolia Vine, Schisandra chinensis. Fruit is mildly tart, with a cranberry-like flavor, and is useful in beverages, preserves, compotes, and confections. In addition to its culinary merits, this species is valued as an ornamental garden plant and there are now many cultivated varieties of Japanese Kadsura, including variegated forms such as ‘Fukurin’. ‘Fukurin’ is characterized by its marginal variegation that has cream colored leaf edges contrasting with dark green interiors and mild marbling.

Japanese Kadsura has year-round interest with attractive flowers in early summer, showy fruit in fall, and seasonally red-tinted foliage in winter and spring. Vines grow between eight and fifteen feet wide and are climb with twining growth. Plants prefer partial shade, regular moisture, and neutral to acidic soils. We’re not yet sure if ‘Fukurin’ will produce fruit on its own, as many members of Schisandraceae are protandrous: producing only male flowers during their juvenile years and eventually producing both male and female flowers on the same plant when mature.

Cold hardy to USDA Zone 7a or to 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
