Jeweled Chain Fern
Woodwardia unigemmata
The Jeweled Chain Fern is a striking, evergreen fern species native to eastern Asia, from the foothills of the Himalayas to Japan. This incredible fern is a conversation piece in the garden, with bold, architectural foliage and emerging foliage that fades from burgundy to salmon pink before finally maturing into an attractive muted green. The leaflets of the fronds are arranged in a distinctive chain-like fashion, giving the plant its namesake. Like its cousin, the Giant Chain Fern, the Jeweled Chain Fern can grow to an impressive size, with three foot long fronds and a clumping habit that can cause a plant to reach eight feet or more in width in time.
Plants thrive in cool and humid environments with consistent moisture in partial to full shade. Jeweled Chain Ferns can tolerate a range of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils, as long as they remain consistently moist. This species can add an lush and vibrant touch to shaded areas or alongside water features and thrives under the shade of larger trees. Its dramatic fronds make it an eye-catching focal point in woodland gardens or tropical landscapes.
