Java Mountain Lingonberry
Vacciunium erythrinum
Syn. Vaccinium varingiifolium var. varingiifolium
Java Mountain Lingonberry, also known as the Java Blueberry or Red-twig Whortleberry, is an intriguing evergreen shrub native to the high-elevation forests and volcanic slopes of Indonesia, particularly on the islands of Java and Sumatra. It typically grows at elevations between 4,500 and 9,000 feet where the climate is much more temperate than in the tropical lowlands. While the edible fruit is similar in flavor to the related Lingonberry from the high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, the plant itself is quite different. Plants have small leaves and a dense, boxwood-like habit, attractive, red, pendulous flowers and small blue fruit.
Java Mountain Lingonberry grows to reach three feet high and wide with time and prefers full to part sun and regular moisture. Like other Vaccinium species, this plant prefers slightly acidic soils and good drainage.
Cold hardy to USDA Zone 6a or to -10 degrees Fahrenheit.
