The Litchi Tomato, also historically known as Morelle De Balbis, is a spiny perennial shrub in the tomato family native to South America. Much like the garden tomato, Litchi Tomato produces an edible fruit that can be used like a tomato or a cherry pepper and has a savory flavor that lends well to compotes, sauces, and baked dishes. While the fruit is small, about the size of a cherry tomato, they are bountiful and fruit indeterminately.
Litchi Tomato plants are fast growing and can be started indoors in late winter or early spring just like annual tomato or pepper plants. Plants ultimately grow to reach about five feet high and benefit from staking or caging. Expect plants to begin producing in about eighty days from sowing. Plants are not frost tolerant.
Cold hardy to USDA zone 10a and above, or to 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
