Podocarpus henkelii

The Long Leafed Yellow-wood, also known as Henkel's yellowwood, is a majestic evergreen tree native to the montane forests of South Africa, particularly in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape. Belonging to the Podocarp family, this incredible, low-maintenance tree offers elegance and luster to the gardens. Trees are notable for their 5-7 inch long glossy, lanceolate leaves that droop in bundles off of lime-green branches. Plants are either male or female, with females producing attractive, large, dark-green fruit that are popular with birds.

Long Leafed Yellow-wood can reach up to thirty feet high and has a straight trunk and a dense, pyramidal crown. In cultivation, trees prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soils and thrives in both full sun and partial shade. They are relatively adaptable to different soil types, including loam and sandy soils. This species is moderately drought tolerant once established, but benefits from regular watering.

Cold hardy to USDA Zone 8b or to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
