Passiflora incarnata

The Maypop, Passiflora incarnata, is a passionflower species native to the southeastern United States. In addition to its striking and exotic flowers, the Maypop has gained popularity for its edible fruit that is similar to the related tropical passionfruit, Passiflora edulis. While Maypop plants exude a tropical allure, they're actually incredibly cold hardy, naturally senescing down to rhizomatous roots during the winter months.

As a deciduous vine, Maypops are vigorous during the growing season, often reaching 20 feet in length in a single summer. Lacy, intricate white and purple flowers are followed by baseball-sized yellow-orange fruit that have a characteristic tangy flavor. Plants are adaptable and easy to grow, but prefer good sun. As a climbing vine, a trellis, fence, arbor, or other suitable vertical surface will improve vigor and productivity.

Cold hardy to USDA Zone 5 or to -25 degrees Fahrenheit.
