Mexican Hawthorn
Crataegus mexicana
Mexican Hawthorn is a unique fruit tree more commonly known as Tejocote in its native Mexico and Guatemala. While many hawthorns are cultivated for their edible fruit, Mexican Hawthorn has perhaps the largest and most useful fruit of them all. It is one of the primary ingredients in the traditional holiday punch Ponche and is often used in making candies and preserves. The fruit has a hard-to-describe, tropical flavor reminiscent of fruit punch, apples, and pineapple.
Growing up to 20 feet high and 12 feet wide, Mexican Hawthorn makes a very ornamental small tree, having evergreen leaves in most climates. Trees prefer full to part full and are adaptable to soil types. We have found that our selection can take on a weeping habit when grown with some shade. Mexican Hawthorn is drought and heat tolerant and overall low maintenance.
Cold hardy to USDA Zone 8a and above, or to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
