Ruscus hypoglossum
Butcher’s Broom is an evergreen perennial native to southern and central Europe. This incredible ornamental plant thrives where others struggle, in dry shade and poor soil. Butcher’s Broom has attractive sprigs of glossy, dark green leaves that emerge from underground rhizomes. This tough, durable foliage is a florist’s best kept secret, making a long-lived cut green in floral displays and bouquets. It also makes a lovely winter holiday garland. Curiously, the plant’s flowers and fruit form in the center of each leaf (or rather, cladode).
Butcher’s Broom grows to about eighteen inches high and two feet wide, but multiple plants can make a showy mass planting in garden borders or as an under-planting around trees and large shrubs. This species prefers well-drained soil and dappled light, but is very adaptable and drought tolerant when established. We’ve found it to be very low-maintenance.
Plants are hardy to USDA zone 7a and above, or to 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
