Roscoea purpurea ‘Cinnamon Stick’

Roscoea purpurea is an uncommon Himalayan ginger-relative sometimes known as Mountain Ginger, Hardy Ginger, or Purple Roscoe Ginger. It is a deciduous perennial herb belonging to the Zingiberaceae family which includes notable plants like ginger and turmeric. It has a long history of cultivation in its native region where it is cherished for its cinnamon-red stems and purple, orchid-like flowers.

Mountain Ginger is a relatively small plant, growing only to one or two feet high and wide. It forms clumps of vibrant burgundy stems, with tropicalesque lanceolate leaves, that emerge from a gently spreading underground rhizome. Mountain Ginger prefers a cool and moist position and thrives in partial shade or dappled sunlight, making it a great choice for woodland gardens, rock gardens, and shaded borders.

Plants are low-maintenance and charming with delicate, captivating flowers. Because it is native to the alpine ecosystems of Nepal, Mountain Ginger is quite cold hardy and is an interesting addition to temperate landscapes.

Cold hardy to USDA zone 5b or to -15 degrees Fahrenheit
