Paper Mulberry
Broussonetia papyrifera
Paper Mulberry is a deciduous tree with a long history of cultivation throughout Asia and Polynesia for its versatile uses. The inner bark of the tree was traditionally used in making paper for calligraphy, artwork, and window coverings. In some cultures, the young leaves of the Paper Mulberry have also been used as a leaf vegetable. The red-orange fruit is also edible, with a flavor similar to the common Mulberry.
Paper Mulberry trees quickly grow to approximately forty feet in height and form an attractive rounded canopy of unique, fig-like lobed leaves. This species is adaptable and tolerant of a variety of soil types, is drought tolerant, and appreciates full sun or partial shade.
Cold hardy to USDA zone 6b or to -5 degrees Fahrenheit
