Greigia sphacelata

Woah, is that a pineapple plant in your yard? Well, almost… We’re excited to be able to offer this rather rare bromeliad native to Central and Southern Chile, which we’re calling Patagonian Pineapple. Since we’re seemingly the only folks selling plants at the moment, that’s what we’re calling it. In it’s native habitat, Greigia sphacelata is one of several species of bromeliads commonly known as chupones, so-called for the edible fruits they produces.

A large terrestrial bromeliad, Patagonian Pineapple is an easy to grow shrub that may ultimately reach to be four or five feet high. This bromeliad has a more solitary appearance, although will slowly produce offsets, likely after flowering. Plants are adaptable with sun requirements and ours seem to grow relatively quickly even in moderate shade.

Unlike many cold hardy bromeliads, Patagonian Pineapple has little to no thorns, so is safe to plant near walkways and paths. Plants are cold hardy to USDA zone 8b and above, or to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.

Plants are available in 4 inch pots.
