Punjab Fig
Ficus palmata ssp. palmata
A close cousin to the common fig, Ficus carica, the Punjab Fig is a deciduous species of fig tree native to north-eastern Africa and western Asia. Similar its more familiar relative, the Punjab fig is cultivated for its edible fruit in its native region. Unlike the common fig, this species has large, heart-shaped leaves that tend to hold perfectly horizontal on the tree, giving the plant a very tropical appearance.
Punjab Fig is vigorous and easy to grow, appreciating full or part sun and regular moisture. While plants are somewhat drought-tolerant when established, but we recommend keeping them well-watered. Trees will grow to reach twenty feet in height in a garden setting, but may be pruned to maintain a smaller size. Our selection of Punjab Fig is not the same as 'Icebox' introduced by Plant Delights Nursery. We do not yet know if this clone requires caprification by a fig wasp to set and ripen fruit.
Cold hardy to USDA zone 8b or to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
