Purple Forest Guava
Psidium eugeniaefolia
The Purple Forest Guava, also known as Araca-una or Araçaúna, is a little-known fruit tree native to the Atlantic rainforest region of Brazil. It is a compact evergreen shrub that grows between six and twelve feet high, with thick glossy leaves and attractive exfoliating bark. The fruit is similar to that of its close cousin the Strawberry Guava, Psidium cattleianum, but is darker in color and distinctly pear-shaped with a pronounced apex . The fruit is dark red or purple and has an intense, fragrant, and tropical flavor. The skin of the fruit can contain tannins, giving it a red wine like flavor but this appears to vary season to season based on water availability.
Plants appreciate full to part sun, consistent moisture, and well-draining soil. For best growth, feed during the active growing season with a balanced fertilizer.
Cold hardy to USDA Zone 9b or to 25 degrees Fahrenheit
