Jaltomata repandidentata
Purple Jaltomato is a shrubby perennial in the tomato family native to the cloud forests of Central and South America. This uncommon fruit is a relative of tomatillos and ground cherries and is cultivated in its native range for its edible, sweet and tangy berries. The berries can be eaten raw or cooked and make a wonderful salsa, similar to a salsa verde (but purple!). While the fruit are small, about the size of a blueberry, they are many and plants produce continuously up until the first frost. This intriguing perennial shows some cold hardiness and should overwinter in USDA Zone 8b.
Plants grow to reach four feet high and wide and may benefit from caging or staking, but much a garden tomato plant. Purple Jaltomato prefers rich soils that are well-draining and regular moisture. If you plan on growing Purple Jaltomato as an annual, sow seeds indoors six to eight weeks before to the last frost.
Cold hardy to USDA Zone 8b or to 15 degrees Fahrenheit
