Redbay

$6.00

Persea borbonia

Persea borbonia is one of three similar Persea species native to the Southeastern United States, along with P. palustris and P. humilis. All three of these species can easily be mistaken for one another and have similar common names. Each of these “bays” have been historically appreciated in cooking much like the related Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis), with aromatic leaves that can be used as an herb, spice, or seasoning. Usually called Redbay, Persea borbonia is sometimes known as swamp bay, tisswood, scrub bay, and shore bay and is the easiest of these species to grow in cultivation.

Redbay is an attractive evergreen tree that grows to about forty feet high, with a pyramidal crown and glossy, lanceolate leaves. Plants are adaptable and are drought tolerant when established but are also accustomed to periodic flooding. We recommend a well draining site with plenty of organic material and full or part sun.

Cold hardy to USDA zones 7b and above, or to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

For sale are packets of 10 seeds
