Shaving Brush Ginger

Hedychium ellipticum

Shaving Brush Ginger, also known as rock butterfly lily or hardy ginger, is an herbaceous perennial plant native to the eastern Himalayas, including parts of India, Nepal, and Bhutan. It is a relatively new introduction into the US horticulture trade but is quickly becoming sought after for its exotic foliage and intricate, spidery white flowers that bloom on top of arching stems. Flowers have white petals with yellow stamens and are arranged in dense, rounded bunches that look somewhat like a shaving brush.

Plants are clumping and will reach four feet high, even in cold winter climates where the plant dies down to the ground. With time, clumps can reach several feet in diameter and are easily divided. Shaving Brush Ginger grows best in full or part sun and with regular watering. This captivating ginger is quite hardy compared to other gingers and blooms reliably in temperate climates. Shaving Brush Ginger makes addition to tropical-style gardens.

Cold hardy to USDA zones 7b and above, or to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
