Strawberry Tree

from $4.00

Arbutus unedo

The Strawberry Tree is a small evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean Basin that is prized for its showy, edible fruit and attractive form. In fact, it’s the national tree of Italy! Trees typically grow to a height of twenty five feet and have a spreading, open canopy that is adorned with glossy, leathery, dark green leaves and pendulous white flowers. Fruit begin green in color, gradually turning varying shades of yellow and orange before finally ripening at a rich, bright red. Part of the Strawberry Tree’s charm is that it will usually have flowers and all stages of ripening fruit on it at one time, giving it a lush and vibrant appearance.

Strawberry Trees prefer a sunny location and well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter, but are otherwise incredibly adaptable. They are relatively drought tolerant but benefit from regular watering during periods of dry weather. The tree is also tolerant of salt spray, making it well-suited for coastal gardens.

Cold hardy to USDA Zone 7b or to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
