Sugar Bush
Rhus ovata
Sugar Bush, also known as Sugar Sumac, is an evergreen shrub native to the chaparral and canyon habitats of southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Much like other sumac species, the berries of Sugar Bush are edible and have a history of culinary use as a spice or in making beverages. The flavor of the berries is tart and citrusy and makes a great “lemonade”. Sugar Bush is an attractive plant with round, dark green, glossy leaves and chunky bunches of red and white flowers that eventually turn into velveteen red fruit.
Plants are tough and resilient, tolerating high heat, drought, salinity, and poor soils. Sugar Bush is fast growing and will quickly reach about ten feet high if well cared for. We recommend giving Sugar Bush full sun and well-draining soil. Plants are great for erosion control and perform well on slopes.
Cold hardy to USDA Zone 8b or to 15 degrees Fahrenheit
