Mini Mule Palm

$150.00

Butia odorata x ( Butia lallemantii x Syagrus romanzoffiana)

We have a very limited number of this exciting new palm hybrid which has been bred to attempt the look of a dwarf coconut palm, but with cold hardiness suitable for temperate climates. A complex, multi-generational hybrid involving three palm species, the Mini Mule palm has an elegant appearance and appears to be reliably cold hardy to about 15 degrees Fahrenheit. This is an exciting specimen palm for anyone who’s attempting that ‘tropical’ look in their temperate garden.

The pollen parent for these plants (× Butyagrus alegretensis) is a naturally occurring hybrid of Butia lallemantii, a dwarf, clustering species of Jelly Palm, and Syagrus romanzoffiana, the Queen Palm discovered in 2007 at Cerro do Tigre in Alegrete, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. This hybrid palm grows up to just ten feet high, is thornless, and doesn’t appear to produce offsets.

Our Mini Mule Palms are a very recently achieved cross and there are no mature plants to document, but they should mature to about ten feet high and wide. So far they are incredibly fast growing palms. We have found that a similar hybrid, Butia odorata x (Butia odorata x Syagrus romanzoffiana), retains most of the appearance of a Mule Palm, and its vigor, but with increased freeze tolerance.

For sale are 1 gallon potted plants
