Sabal palmetto

The Cabbage Palm, also known as the Sabal Palmetto or simply Palmetto, is an iconic palm tree species native to the Southeastern United States and parts of the Caribbean. The common name Cabbage Palm originates from the practice of harvesting the tender, edible growing bud of this species, called ‘heart of palm’, from felled trees which has a cabbage-like flavor. As a ‘fan palm’, this species has costapalmate leaves that give it a lofty appearance, along with unique persistent leaf bases that stick to the trunk often called ‘boots’.

Cabbage Palms can ultimately grow to reach forty feet in height, although are typically seen closer to twenty feet high in garden settings. These palms are quite cold hardy, but can be slow growing in cool-summer climates. This species thrives where it can get plenty of heat and irrigation. Cabbage Palmetto is relatively resistant to pests and diseases and easy to grow.

Cold hardy to USDA zones 8a and above, or to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
