Cape Restio is an elegant, grass-like evergreen perennial from the Cape region of South Africa. Related to bamboo, Cape Restio has a unique habit, looking much like a large clump of reeds, rush, or horsetail. Unlike bamboo, Cape Restio maintains a manageable size and is very sun, heat, and drought tolerant. Plants form dense, upright clumps of tough, reed-like stems that open up to soft, plumose, foxtail foliage that carries a dark bronze hue. In spring, Cape Restio foliage is accented by a profusion of grassy flowers and seeds that hang down from arching, weighed down stems.
Plants slowly grow up to five feet high and wide and prefer full sun and well-draining soil. We recommend planting Cape Restio somewhere where you can watch the fluffy foliage gently sway in the breeze.
Cold hardy to 15 degrees F or to USDA Zone 8b
