Laurel-leaf Currant is an evergreen, scrambling shrub native to China that is too rarely offered in the nursery trade. Unlike most currants, this species stays in leaf all year long, acts more like a groundcover, and is winter blooming. Plants sport thick, waxy, leaves with red stems, and grow with a trailing habit, gently layering and spreading with time. In late winter, large clusters of showy, cream-colored flowers emerge which remind us a lot of hyacinth.
If left to its own devices, the trailing new growth on Laurel-leaf Currant will slowly layer and set roots, but is easily lifted or pruned. Tolerant of heavy shade, this adaptable plant adds great texture for that weird hole in the garden under the large shrubs. Unlike other Ribes species, Laurel-leaf Currant is quite drought tolerant.
Cold hardy to USDA zone 7a or above, or to 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
For sale are 1 gallon potted plants.
