Chilean Firebush
Embothrium coccineum
The Chilean Firebush is a striking evergreen shrub native to the temperate rainforests of southern Chile and Argentina. Known for its profuse display of vibrant, scarlet flowers in late spring, this plant makes an incredible ornamental addition to the garden. The tubular flowers are a hit with hummingbirds!
Plants grow up to twenty feet high in cultivation, although ten to twelve feet is more typical. Chilean Firebush prefers moist soils with good drainage and full to part sun. As a member of the Proteaceae family, Chilean Firebush is well-adapted to nutrient-poor soils and dislikes fertilizers, especially those containing phosphorous. We recommend giving this shrub a sheltered position away from high-wind areas.
Cold hardy to USDA zone 7b and above, or to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
