Cornus mas

Cornelian Cherry is a deciduous dogwood tree native from central Europe through western Asia. In its native region the abundant edible fruit are cherished for their sour cherry-like flavor and are enjoyed prepared in various preserves and baked goods. While the red, oval fruit can be eaten fresh, they tend to be tart and can be astringent when not fully ripe.

Plants slowly grow up to twenty feet high and fifteen feet wide and develop an attractive, exfoliating bark with age. One of the first plants to bloom in Spring, Cornelian Cherry puts on a dazzling display of sparkling, golden blossoms before the leaves even begin to emerge. During the active growing season trees have dark green and lustrous leaves typical for a dogwood species.

Cold hardy to USDA Zone 5a or to -20 degrees Fahrenheit.
