Shop All Dragon's Tail Fern

Dragon's Tail Fern

$15.00

Asplenium X ebenoides

This intriguing little evergreen fern hails from a limited region the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern North America. Also known as the walking spleenwort, we think the common name Dragon’s Tail Fern sounds much better. This naturally occurring hybrid is a cross between Asplenium rhizophyllum and Asplenium platyneuron. Dragon’s Tail Fern is unique in that it has long, slender fronds with bizarrely cut leaves that are highly variable. The strangest feature is this plants habit of ‘walking’ when the tip of a frond touches the ground, roots, and creates a new plant. This trait allows Dragon’s Tail Fern to gently spread over time.

Being naturally found growing in rocky crevices, cliff faces, and woodlands, Dragon’s Tail Fern is an adaptable plant that’s easy to care for, so long it doesn’t dry out too much. Partial to full shade is best. Plants are compact, only reaching about a foot tall, so make a wonderful mass planting in garden borders or as a groundcover.

Cold hardy to USDA zone 5a, or to approximately -15 degrees Fahrenheit.

For sale are 4 inch potted plants
