Vaccinium ovatum

Evergreen Huckleberry is a fruiting shrub native to much of western North America, from British Columbia to northern California. The plant has historical and cultural significance among Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest who have and continue to use the berries as a traditional food. Even today, wild huckleberries are popular for fresh eating, dried, or in jams and pies.

Native to a variety of habitats in coastal forests and mountain woodlands, Evergreen Huckleberry is often associated with coniferous forests. Plants are evergreen and have dense, boxy, dark-green foliage with vibrant, bronze new growth. Evergreen Huckleberry typically grows to eight feet high and is easily pruned to shape. This adaptable shrub tolerates full sun or moderate shade and is drought tolerant, but prefers acidic soils much like its relative the blueberry.

Cold hardy to USDA Zone 7a or to 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
